Don't want to enter everything by hand?
Upload your prior-year return to prepopulate some details, plus this year's documents (W-2s, 1099s, and other forms) — our preparers (and soon, automatic document scanning) will take it from there.
These answers determine Form 1040 vs. 1040NR and unlock the right fields on every later step.
SSN/ITIN application in progress (Form SS-5 or W-7) — the actual number can be added once it's received; the return can still be prepared in the meantime.

SSN/ITIN application in progress for spouse — add the actual number once received.
Residency
✅
US citizen — always a resident for federal tax purposes
Citizenship alone makes someone a US tax resident under IRC §7701(b), regardless of visa, current country of residence, or days physically present. The Substantial Presence Test only classifies non-citizens, so the fields below don't apply and are hidden.
2. Dependents
3. Income
Wages
Box 3 feeds the self-employment tax combined-wage-base calc; Box 5 feeds Additional Medicare Tax (falls back to Box 1 if left blank); Box 4 feeds the excess Social Security withholding credit if multiple employers over-withheld.
State Wages (Box 15–17, informational — this tool doesn't prepare state returns)
Interest Income
Dividend Income
Capital Gain / (Loss)
If a broker's 1099-B covers many transactions, you don't need to list every trade — enter the covered and noncovered totals from the 1099-B summary page below. Only list individual transactions for sales with no 1099-B (Box C/F), wash sales, or other adjustments that need their own line.
1099-B Summary Totals
One row per box, straight from your broker's 1099-B summary page. Leave a row at $0 if you don't have that box.
Individual Transactions (no 1099-B, or needs its own adjustment)
Term (short vs. long) and the Form 8949 box are worked out automatically from the dates and 1099-B status.

Self-Employment & Other Income
QBI details (only matters if there's SE income)
Wage/UBIA limits only bind at higher taxable income - leave at $0 for typical clients and the 20% deduction still computes correctly.
4. Deductions & Payments
5. AMT & Credits
Alternative Minimum Tax (residents only)
No extra entry needed here — AMT is calculated automatically in the background from the income and deductions already entered, and a full Form 6251 is generated below.
Foreign Tax Credit
Covers foreign tax paid on passive income — foreign interest, dividends, capital gains, and similar investment income. (Foreign tax on wages or self-employment income from working abroad is a different category with its own rules — not covered here; flag that to a preparer.)
For a nonresident return, this credit applies only against tax on effectively connected income (ECI) — not against flat/treaty-rate NEC income.
Live calculation, mirrors the firm's Individual 1040/1040NR Model workbook line for line, including AMT, NIIT, QBI, and Schedule 3 credits. All figures should be reviewed by a preparer before filing.
